Stage 8 of the Giro Women 2026 had been anticipated for months as one of the hardest stages in women's cycling history. Originally scheduled over 106km, the route featured the ascent of the giant of the Western Alps: Colle delle Finestre, with its 18.5 km at 9.2% average gradient and the final 8km on gravel, crested at -28km from the finish, followed by a technical downhill and the final climb to Sestriere.
As stated by Giusy Virelli, race director of the Corsa Rosa, around midday a small avalanche detached near the upper switchbacks of Finestre. The authorities of the Orsiera Rocciavrè Natural Park carried out an inspection and identified a cracked ice slab, located 200m above the road, with a risk of detachment. They therefore requested that the race avoid that section for safety reasons. The jury decided to finish the stage 1km from the summit, a decision communicated while the riders had already been climbing for around 20 minutes.
The stage concluded with a four-rider uphill sprint won by Vollering, depriving the race of what could have been a spectacular finale. Naturally, the safety of the riders must always come first, but one question inevitably arises: could the danger have been identified earlier? What remains certain is the disappointment of not witnessing the queen stage in its full glory.
