The day's breakaway established itself with about 120km to go and was made up of I. Cagnazzo, E. Roussel, and O. Gissinger. For a few kilometers, K. Sadnik and N. Steigenga launched a counter-attack to chase them down before being reabsorbed by the peloton. Shortly after, Roussel also dropped off the pace from the break and was caught by the group, leaving only Cagnazzo and Gissinger at the front of the race. Their breakaway came to an end with 17km remaining, as the peloton was by then fully geared up for a bunch sprint.
Barbara Guarischi hit the final corner in the lead with Lorena Wiebes locked onto her wheel. Wiebes launched her sprint with about 300 meters to go and comfortably took the victory on this opening stage of the Vuelta a Burgos! Chiara Consonni finished second, edging out Georgia Baker in a photo-finish.
