⛰ Stage 8: Sisteron - Nice (171.9 km)
With 144km remaining, the breakaway of the day launches, featuring L. Adegeest, a frequent attacker throughout this Tour, alongside M. Squiban. Their advantage reaches a maximum of 6'30" before beginning to steadily decrease.
The stage profile packs a punch in the final 20km, featuring the Côte de Colomars and the Côte de la Ginestière. However, the true test is a brutal 500-meter ramp averaging 13% immediately following the Côte de la Ginestière.
The breakaway remains out front over the Côte de Colomars, but on the technical descent that follows, Squiban suffers a crash, escaping any fractures. The peloton sweeps her up, and a few kilometers later Adegeest is also reabsorbed. This clears the way for FDJ to take control, setting a furious tempo that sets up an attack for Vollering on the 500m wall.
Vollering attacks, assisted by a clever tactical gap opened by her teammate Gery between Vollering and the yellow jersey, Niewiadoma. Longo Borghini and Niewiadoma manage to bridge across, but inside the final 50 meters, Niewiadoma is unable to hold Vollering's wheel. It proves just enough for Vollering to secure the stage victory and, more importantly, to snatch the yellow jersey with just one stage remaining! Behind them, Longo Borghini edges out Niewiadoma in the sprint for second. The general classification gap between Vollering and Niewiadoma now stands at just 8 seconds, while third place overall remains with Reusser!
