For the seventh year, the Road World Championships program featured the Mixed Relay TTT, consisting of two team time trial legs with three riders each: one for the men's category and one for the women's category.
After the men's leg, Italy (Ganna, Cattaneo, Sobrero) led the standings by 11" over France (Armirail, Cavagna, Labrosse) and 12" over the defending champions of Australia (Matthews, Rogers, Leahy), while Switzerland (Küng, Bissegger, Schmid) trailed in sixth place, 35" off the leaders, due to a mechanical issue that sidelined team leader Küng early on. During the women's leg, the Italian trio of Longo Borghini, Guazzini, and Trinca Colonel continued to gain ground on France (Kerbaol, Berthet, Borras) and Australia (Wilson-Haffenden, Coupland, Baker), while Switzerland, led by a relentless Marlen Reusser alongside Liechti and Rüegg, mounted a strong comeback. On the final section, featuring the short climb to the finish line, the Italian team lost cohesion, with Longo Borghini having to slow down to keep Trinca Colonel on her wheel, allowing France to close the gap, though not enough to make the pass. Italy was thus able to celebrate its first world title in this event, following three previous podium finishes, beating the French squad by just 8 seconds. Switzerland completed its podium recovery to take the bronze medal, 20" off first place, setting the fastest time in the women's leg by 12" over France and 15" over Italy. Fourth place went to Australia at 40", and fifth to Germany at 49", also hampered by a puncture for Bauernfeind early in the women's event.
